Where is Dong Nai Nature Reserve?

Dong Nai Nature Reserve, 90km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, will take you 2 hours by car to get here.

This is a protected area along with Cat Tien National Park to create the ecosystem of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve, the largest biosphere reserve in southern Vietnam.

Although it is very close to Ho Chi Minh City and is part of the ecosystem of Cat Tien National Park, this NR is very little known to tourists. The reason is that next to a very famous Cat Tien National Park, this place becomes overshadowed. Another reason is that tourism here has not been invested worthy of its potential for development. Therefore, accompanying services (hotels, restaurants…) have not yet developed.

How about the habitat and birds?

On the contrary, this is a paradise for birds, representing the lowland primeval forest ecosystem (elevation below 300m) in southern Vietnam.

Dong Nai Nature Reserve is regulated by a large lake, Tri An hydroelectric lake, with an area equivalent to Ho Chi Minh City. This is an ideal camping spot for domestic tourists (it takes just over an hour by car from Ho Chi Minh City to get here).

Currently, Vietnambirds operates a one-day tour (no overnight stay) to this NR to take photos of birds in bird hides.

Tour itinerary:

• 5:00 am pick-up from Hochiminh City. Breakfast and coffee at the restaurant on the way.
• 7:00 am arrive to the first hide in Dong Nai NR for Bar-bellied Pitta, Blue-rumped Pitta, Broadbills, Babbler, Racket-tailed treepie…
• 11:00 am lunch and rest to 12:30 pm.
• 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm: the second hide for Indochinese green magpies, woodpeckers, babblers, broadbills…
• 5:00 pm start to back to Hochiminh city, arriving at the city about 7:00 pm.
