A photography tour of pitta birds in Vietnam

With 9 species of Pitta birds, Vietnam is considered an attractive destination to photograph them. The group of pitta birds has in common are always vibrant and attractive colors, large round eyes with a humorous pose that make them attractive to photographers. However, Pitta birds usually only live and feed on the ground, in the canopy of the forest, meager light often makes photography difficult. Good photos require good lighting conditions and relatively few disruptive subjects such as branches, garbage, etc.

The Pitta photography tour will have clear goals such as Bar-bellied Pitta, Blue-rumped Pitta, Blue Pitta, Rusty-naped Pitta. It’s a perfect target for passionate photographers.

In addition, there are also colorful Pitta species and they are migratory birds to Vietnam such as Hooded Pitta, Fairy Pitta, and Blue-winged Pitta.

A pitta photography tour in Vietnam will currently take 5 to 7 days, depending on your time budget and other goals you want to have after your journey.

In the schedule, we are apart from 4 main goals: Bar-bellied Pitta, Blue-rumped Pitta, Blue Pitta, and Rusty-naped Pitta

Bar-bellied Pitta site, we can have more: Abbott’s Babbler, puff-throated babbler, Black and Red Broadbill, Blue-winged leafbird, White-rumped Shama, Indochinese Blue Flycatcher, and Siberian blue Robin, moreover, some woodpeckers will visit the hide too.

Blue-rumped Pitta side, we may have other birds that also visit frequently such as Greater Coucal, greater racket-tailed Drongo, Black-headed Bulbul, Black-crested Bulbul, Stripe-throated Bulbul. There are additional shooting targets such as Germain’s peacock pheasant, Siamese fireback, Red-junglefowl, Green-legged Partridge.

We’ll spend 2.5 days of our journey for these 2 bird-sides. If visitors have a good time, we can spend an extra day taking photos of other beautiful birds on the trails: Sunbirds, Raptors, and Orange-breasted Trogon.

In the next 2 days, visitors will explore the next destination of the journey, take pictures of Blue Pitta, this subspecies in Vietnam are endemic, they are blue in the upper part color and the breast is scaly with a very Orange-red make more pretty. On this bird-site, we have quite a few sub-goals that are always visited such as Bar-backed Partridge, Long-tailed Broadbill, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Red-billed Scimitar-babbler, White-browed Scimitar babbler, Emerald Dove, Blue and White Flycatcher, Hainan Blue Flycatcher, Warblers, Siberian Thrush, Orange-headed thrush, White-throated Rock-thrush, … Especially the very brilliant bird: Indochinese Green-magie.

In the last 2 days of our journey, we will spend time with Rusty-naped Pitta. Pitta species has an elevated living area (Race of bird in South Vietnam usually only found at an altitude of more than 1000m above sea level), in humid old forests with fog all year round. This is a difficult bird to conquer and would be a very desirable target. In addition to the main goal, we also have additional sub-targets that are beautiful birds to visit the bird-site such as 2 endemic bird species with very narrow distribution Collared laughing thrush, Black-crowned Fulvetta; and many other attractive birds: Black-hooded Laughingthrush, Mountain fulvetta, White-tailed Robin, Grey-bellied Tesia, Pygmy-wren Babbler,… In addition, photographers also had time with beautiful birds Others live on the nearby stream: Slaty-backed Forktail, Spotted forktail, Plumbeous Water-Redstar.
