Where is the Mang Den forest?
This large forest area is 80km from Kontum city, easy to get to and reach, there is a small town named Mang Den, specializing in serving local tourists (due to its cool climate), so birders can easily find for yourself a hotel as well as a restaurant.
From Mang Den, visitors can easily go to Da Nang city by road, or to nearby Pleiku city to flight to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
This is an evergreen broadleaf tropical forest area, with an altitude of 900-1300m, continuously adjacent to Ngoc Linh Nature reserve.
This place has recorded many bird species, making it an attractive destination for bird watchers and bird photographers.
However, because it is not located in any conservation area or national park, and due to uncontrolled hunting (mostly for the ornamental bird industry), bird species in this area are currently in decline significantly. Some species can almost no longer be seen in the wild.
The sad thing is that the endemic bird species found here “Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush” may become extinct within the next few years, but there has been no action from the government or wildlife conservation organizations.
In addition, although the species composition is diverse, the number of species is very small. The whole forest is quiet without a single bird sound. This silence is in complete contrast to the scene just few years ago, this shows that an astonishing rate of bird destruction.
Some bird species such as Sunbirds, Minivets… that used to be found everywhere, are now almost impossible to find.
Humans have become the biggest enemy of birds in this area, so bird watching and bird photography here have become more difficult than ever, they always appear very quickly, hide and are very far away out of sight of birders.
Is there a local bird watching guide in Mang Den?
The answer is no, you can easily find a pet-shop with many types of birds (of wild origin) kept in cages if you ask if you want to see birds. In Vietnam in general and anywhere in particular, bird watching is understood as wanting to see birds in cages and you will be shown how to find a bird store. There they hope to sell you some birds at a good price, because you have traveled a long way to come here to see the birds in their store.
